Itinerary

Arrive in Madrid. Enjoy a leisurely tour of the Old Town, including Madrid de los Austrias, Puerta del Sol, Arenal Street, San Ginés Chocolateria, Plaza Mayor, and the Cuchilleros Arch. Visit the Reina Sofía Museum, expanded by Jean Nouvel, Caixa Forum by Herzog & de Meuron, and the Thyssen Bornemisza Museum. If time permits, visit the Prado Museum, one of the world's finest art galleries. Dinner and overnight stay in Madrid.

After breakfast, use public transport to the Torres Business Area Centre. Walk through Henry N. Cobb’s Space Tower, Cesar Pelli’s Crystal Tower, PwC Tower (Carlos Rubio Carvajal, Enrique Álvarez-Sala Walther, Rubio & Álvarez-Sala), the Caja Madrid Tower by Norman Foster, and the Sacyr Tower by R & AS. In Plaza Castilla, see the European gate and the KIO Towers by Phillip Johnson and John Burgee. Walk past the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium and the Torre Picasso. View iconic buildings in Spanish architecture history, such as the BBVA building by Sáenz de Oiza. In the afternoon, explore the riverside area with new 21st-century projects, including Dominique Perrault’s Caja Mágica, the shell bridge by West8, and the Slaughterhouse, now a cultural centre. Dinner and free time in Madrid.

After breakfast, take a private bus to the outskirts of Madrid to see social housing projects by prominent architects. Visit the PAU of Carabanchel to see works by Dosmasuno architects, ACM, FOA, and Thom Mayne. In Villaverde, see buildings by Chipperfield, and in Vallecas, explore projects by the Study Entresitio and Ecobulevar of Vallecas. In San Chinarro, see the Mirador by MVRDV and Blanca Lleó, and VPO buildings by Carlos Rubio Carvajal, Enrique Álvarez-Sala Walther, Rubio & Álvarez-Sala. Dinner and free time in Madrid.

After breakfast and check-out, take the bus to Bilbao. After a short break, walk through the Old Quarter, seeing icons such as the Arenal Bridge, the Arriaga Theatre, Metro Bilbao by Norman Foster, and the "La Alhondiga" Cultural Centre by Philippe Starck. Also, visit the Health Offices of Coll-Barreu. Dinner and free time in Bilbao.

After breakfast, visit the surroundings of the Ría, home to Bilbao’s most emblematic buildings: the Zubizuri Passarela by Calatrava, Isozaki Towers by Arata Isozaki, Sheraton by Legorreta, and Deusto University by Rafael De Moneo. Continue to the Euskalduna Congress Palace and the Abandoibarra area. Take the Artxanda Funicular for magnificent city views. In the evening, visit Frank Gehry’s Guggenheim Museum, exploring both the exterior (with Louise Bourgeois’ "Mum Spider" and Jeff Koons’ "Puppy") and interior (entrance included). Dinner and free time in Bilbao.

Excursion to Donostia (San Sebastián) by regular bus (1 hour). Walk through the Concha area, the beach, and the city front. See the Town Hall, Plaza de la Constitución, Victoria Eugenia Theatre, Rafael Moneo’s Kursaal, and the Comb of the Wind by Peña Ganchegui with Chillida sculptures. Return to Bilbao for the night.

Check out from Bilbao accommodation. Transfer by private bus to the airport for a flight to Barcelona. Upon arrival, transfer by private bus to your lodging. In the afternoon, walk through the centre of Barcelona, along Las Ramblas, Plaza Sant Jaume, Plaza Real, Liceu Theatre, Boqueria Market, the Cathedral, and the Gothic Quarter. Overnight stay in Barcelona.

Visit the city centre, including Santa Maria del Mar, Palau de la Musica, Picasso Museum (renovated by Jordi Garcés), and Born Market. End the tour in Barceloneta, a traditional fishing district. In the afternoon, visit the Raval district, including Rambla del Raval and cultural facilities such as MACBA by Meier and the Centre of Contemporary Culture by Albert Viaplana. Overnight stay in Barcelona.

Barcelona is renowned for its Modernist architecture, particularly by Gaudí. Visit the Eixample district, developed in the 19th century by Ildefons Cerdà, home to iconic modernist buildings such as La Pedrera (Gaudí), Casa Batlló (Gaudí), Casa Amatller (Puig i Cadafalch), Casa Lleó Morera (Domènech i Montaner), Montaner i Simón – Fundació Tapies (Domènech i Montaner), Casa Fuster (Domènech i Montaner), and Casa Vicens (Gaudí). In the afternoon, take the metro to Park Güell, one of Gaudí’s masterpieces. Continue to the Sagrada Familia (entrance included). On the way, visit the Hospital de Sant Pau de Domènech I Montaner, recently expanded by Esteve Bonell. Overnight stay in Barcelona.

Transfer by private bus to Montjuic. Visit the Castle, the Miró Foundation (Josep Lluís Sert), the Jardí Botànic (Ferrater), and the Olympic installations area, including Palau Sant Jordi (Arata Isozaki) and the Telecom Tower (Calatrava). Visit the Pavellón Expo 1929 (Mies van der Rohe) and Caixa Forum building (entrance by Arata Isozaki). In the afternoon, explore the seafront and Olympic Village, renovated for the 1992 Olympic Games. See the Tower of the Hotel Arts (SOM), the Fish (Frank Gehry), the Olympic Village (MBM), and Paseo Nova Icaria (Enric Miralles). End the day at Barceloneta Beach. Overnight stay in Barcelona.

Dedicate the day to the latest architecture in the city. Use public transport to Plaza de les Glòries and visit the new technological district 22@, transformed from the industrial district of Poble Nou. Highlights include MBM’s Disseny Hub, Jean Nouvel’s Agbar Tower, Juli Capella’s Silken Hotel, David Chipperfield’s Diagonal 197 Offices, OAB Audiovisual-Mediapro Campus, Batlle i Roig’s Mercat de Les telecommunications Commissariat, Seu Indra (b720 Arquitectos + R & AS), the Mediatic of Cloud9, and the Parc Central del Poblenou by Jean Nouvel. Take the tram to the Forum area to see the Herzog & de Meuron building and the new Telefónica Tower by Enric Massip. Overnight stay in Barcelona.
